Big Boy, Red Bull and A New Year

On a daily basis I write this BLOG entry over in my head. At least three or four different versions tip toe through my noggin on any given day. I have no reason not to sit down and type it…okay let’s be honest here, I am a mother of a three year old . So that right there might be a great excuses or at least my excuses as to my lack of blog progress.
A three year old! Can you believe it? November 1st marked my babies “big boy” birthday. There was a “purple painting party” to mark the occasion. After all, purple is the boys favorite color and he does have his mama’s artsy gene. A room full of three year olds, paint and fragile pottery. All the ingredients for a night to remember! As sweet as November started it grew bitter toward the middle. On November 14th my fathers mother, my grandmother passed away. And like that all my grandparents are gone. It’s makes me feel so old. With loss comes remembrance and this holiday season was filled with remembrance. I will always remember my grandmothers kind spirit and will be forever grateful for how she introduced me to the Beatles. I will never forget summers spent with her in Pennsylvania, a little yellow boom box and The Beach Boys on cassette tape. She was a great grandmother.
Before I knew it, December had arrived. Red Bull became my new BFF and bed time became later and later each night. Seven Ply orders were at an all time high and I couldn’t have been happier. Elijah and I decorated early. He loved putting all the ordainment's on the tree and dancing to Christmas music by it’s glow. A few days before Christmas we packed our bags and headed to the mountains. The Smokey Mountains to be exact and it was just what we needed. A long anticipated vacation, we spent a week in a cozy cabin nestled high on a mountain. With spectacular views, family, food and even a white Christmas, our trip was just perfect. Elijah sprinkled magical reindeer food (dry oatmeal with glitter) so that Santa’s reindeer would find their way to the mountains and Old Saint Nick found us, of course!
As fast as Christmas arrived…..Christmas was over. I love putting Christmas decorations away. Really I do, it doesn’t make me sad in the slightest. Your house feels neater and once the tree is out, your living room seems huge. A few entries back I shared a picture of our kitchen or lack of. We have been working on the house and now have a beautiful functioning kitchen. Thank God! I will be content if I never have to use a microwave again in my life time! Our hard work is definitely paying off and this house is starting to feel like a home.
An update on Dirt: Dirt (the turtle) is doing fantastic. He is still very small but has taken well to his new “heated” home. He enjoys swimming and has a pretty big appetite for such a little guy.

From the Dirt Came "Dirt".

When I asked you to become a follower of my BLOG I promised stories of the Hurricane (my 2 ½ year old son, Elijah) so here it goes! In the beginning of the summer we watched a Mama box turtle lay her eggs in our side yard. Elijah waited, as patiently as a 2 ½ year old possibly could three looooong hot summer months for the babies to hatch.
And hatch they did on September 3rd! As everyone in South Jersey awaited the arrival of Hurricane Earl, my son welcomed the long anticipated appearance of a sweet baby box turtle. I never thought I could fall in love with a turtle but one look into those over sized eyes and I knew he had found a home. So off we went to the pet store. We traveled through hurricane forced winds, a major down pour and hail to our destination. (Well, not quite, turns out Earl was a dud, however did provide some swell)
At the pet store we learned all about how to take care of this little guy and that we actually where doing this baby box turtle a favor. Turns out that most baby box turtles don’t make it through their first winter. A proven fact for this little guys sibling. I won’t go into great detail about that other than “RIP Pancake”.
On a much happier note, Elijah named his first pet turtle “Dirt” because well, that’s just where we found him. He is so itty bitty…I would say about the size of a silver dollar. He has taken very well to his new home and spends most of the days sleeping….which tends to bore Elijah but I have assured him that Dirt needs this long nap time to grow. And we are all very excited to watch that unfold right before our eyes!

A Sad Day

Bobchi….Margaret Thomas 1919-2010
Today is my grandmothers funeral…a sad sad day. I look forward to the day that I will see her again and we walk the streets of gold. Rejoicing that she is no longer in pain and is in heaven with our heavenly Father.

Hooray Today Is the Day!

My lip’s have been sealed for oh so long and today I feel the need to shout it out…..”Featured Seller! Today! Hooray!” The journey has been a trying to say the least. In the midst of a major work shop move, house remodel, the passing of my most loved Grandmother, Bobchi, I have somehow kept my head up and my eye on the goal. In the beginning of the entire process I was so focused on Seven Ply but the recent events have changed my prospective on this little thing we call life. Bobchi was 92 years old. She was born in 1919. She lived a full life, raised 6 girls and even camped her way across country ALONE with a with four of her children. She is my hero….for real! I have a hard enough time handling my little Hurricane. I can not image dealing with six! She was ahead of her time with most things. Back in the day she wore the cutest dresses and wedges…I bet she was the envy of all her friends. When it came to sewing her fabric choices where always amazing. She tap danced live on the radio before television was even around! She took care of me when I was little. She inspires me to do more, try harder and push on. I know that she would have been proud of this little accomplishment. She was always proud of me. Today is bitter sweet. Bochi and Jogi in their twenties. Life as I know it. Its pretty much like camping with a microwave ha.

Philly is so Hot right now!

Well I made it through another Punk Rock Flea Market. It was super hot... around 103 or something. I think the r5 guys need to rethink the dates for this event. So far the last two have had the most extreme weather (guys spring and fall hint hint). Even with the all the sweat and complaining it was still packed with people and lots of fun. Here are some photos from the day. Thanks for everyone that stopped by to see Seven Ply and Vintage Wave.
This is me checking in with the babysitter.

They are saying this was the biggest PRFM yet. I believe them... image 103 degrees outside then invite 3,000 people to warm it up some more.

Here is a great PRFM find! I love vintage skateboards. I also picked up a few old skate mags from the 80's.

Recently, a company named Ecoist did a sweet write up about Seven Ply. I was flattered and wanted to return the favor of course! You must check out their site. Ecoist makes eco friendly bags and purses from pre-consumer waste like candy wrappers and Coca Cola labels. It doesn’t get much greener then that! I have seen some of these products in person and was blown away! They make the cutest clutches for those hot summer nights out on the town! I was just on their site tonight and they are having an awesome sale….so get on it!

Introducing STRUBE!

It seems like just when I think things are going to slow down for a change a tornado touches down to stir my life back up. What they say is true…no rest for the weary has become my world. Where do I begin….well, we are now in full swing with our new house remodel. Denis is doing such a great job. It is starting to feel like home. Elijah just started summer school! He is getting so big and loves spending time with his new friends. Seven Ply has been keeping me on my toes. There are so many little things that need to be done that I was having a hard time keeping up with so I put out a Face Book blast looking for a trusty intern and along came Strube! She has been helping me out now for a few weeks. I needed someone that could deal with my perfectionist ways and Strube was ready for the challenge. She hopes to one day work for a magazine writing articles and has even been taking pictures for a small local magazine. She is one busy girl and the newest addition to the Seven Ply family. She wants to learn it all and I hope that her time with Seven Ply will allow her to see the in’s and out’s of running a business. We are defiantly learning a lot together!

Thanks to Pennwood

Pennwood hooked it up with a box of skate board scraps this week. I'm looking forward to using these left over pieces that would normally be burned or thrown into a landfill. My son Elijah was just as excited to open up the box as me. Thanks Joe for the awesome scraps.

Keep them coming!

It is amazing how fast the decks stack up. I dont even know how many there are in my workshop, which has no heat by the way :( Could be up to around 400ish I think. So many colors and graphics to choose from. Big thanks to Rising Sun, Barewires and Woodys for always hooking it up with a ton of broken seven ply.

Scoutie Girl*

Check out this great website Scoutie Girl. They featured my heart necklace and some other great handmade finds in the "a dude’s guide to shopping handmade". Enjoy! About... Scoutie Girl scours the world of independent craft & design and puts the best – or at least our favorites – right here for the world to see. we believe in the power of independence, the power of creation, the power of handmade to change the world. we believe that mass-production and rampant consumerism have created a culture that is hungry for “more” & “cheap” – we believe that handmade can change that, reconnect us with our fellow (wo)man and put life back into a bit of perspective.
